This week, I am sharing a few winter driving tips that will help you get through these last few weeks of winter and help you cruise right into spring! General Driving Tips:

• Avoid driving when you’re fatigued.
• NEVER warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
• Make certain your tires are properly inflated to the correct PSI.
• Keeping your gas tank at least half full will avoid gas line freeze-up.
• DO NOT use cruise control when driving on any slippery surfaces (wet, ice, sand, etc.)
• Always look and steer where you want your vehicle to go.

• ALWAYS wear your seatbelt.

Tips For Driving In Winter Weather Conditions:

• Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for gaining traction and avoiding skids, so accelerate and decelerate at a slow and steady pace.
• Take your time and drive slow. Each trip will take longer on snow-covered roads and a collision will only set you back in time. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as it does on dry pavement. So, give yourself a few extra minutes and a little extra space.
• Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold braking.
• If you can avoid it, don’t stop. Especially on a hill – there is nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road and going nowhere because you have lost traction.
• Make it known what kind of driving assistance you have (AAA, Roadside Assistance, etc.). If you don’t have one – invest in one!
• Watch the weather reports before leaving for the day, errands, or travels.

Checking your vehicle’s tire pressure is actually more important than you probably thought. In fact, during the winter months, you should be checking your tires every day before you head out. You’re probably thinking what? Every day before I leave is a lot. Yes, it can be but also doing this quick check will better your drive and enhance your safety out on the road. This week we want to tell you why you should be checking your tires PSI and why it’s so important. Trust us, it’s most definitely worth taking the few seconds to take a quick glance!

• Proper PSI will help optimize performance and your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. This is especially useful if you tend to run your A/C or heat for long periods of time and increasing gas prices).
• Avoid sidewall flexing and tire squirm when properly inflated.
• Avoid potential dangers like collisions, blowouts, heat build-up, and potential rolling hazards.
• Correct PSI improves durability and performance designed to match the specific needs of your vehicle.
• PSI stabilizes the tire’s structure, blends responsiveness, traction, and handling.
• Extreme temperatures and driving conditions will affect your tire’s PSI.
• Underinflated tires can wear prematurely due to being soft and unable to maintain their proper shape.
• Overinflated tires can wear unevenly due to being rigid and hard. It can also lead to a tire blowout.
• If your vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time, chances are the PSI is incorrect and you will need to fill up the tires. Vehicles that sit without being used have a tendency to have under-inflated tires.
• Your tires will last longer and the tread won’t wear out as easily if your tires are always properly inflated to the correct PSI.

We hope you know that there are different gas types. But one thing we find is that people don’t know the difference between those fuel types. This week we are breaking it down for you (and us) so we all know the difference! Check it out below and if you’re ready to upgrade your ride, stop in to see our team for a test drive!

What is the difference between fuel types?

• The first and most obvious difference is the price! I mean, when you pull up and the “premium” fuel is more expensive, it’s pretty obvious of that first difference. But,  did you know that premium fuel tends to run about 20 cents higher than regular fuel? Yup, it’s the truth!
• In addition to the price, premium fuel comes with a higher octane level. Those numbers, commonly seen as 92 or 93 and 87, are to differentiate the octane levels of premium, being higher number, to regular gas, lower number. Octane is how much compression a fuel can withstand before igniting – a higher octane gas won’t pre-ignite or explode as quickly as lower octane gas.

The right fuel matters, here’s why…

Each and every vehicle is designed differently and each one is designed to run at top performance with a specific type of fuel. If you’re unsure which type of fuel you should be filling up with, give us a call or check your owners manual for answers!

While it might be tempting to fill your vehicle up with a lower grade of octane to save money, it could damage your vehicle and your vehicle will not perform as it is intended if it is required to use higher octane levels. The issue? These lower octane levels allow combustion to happen too fast in your engine which can lead to issues. Issues like your engine could begin to make knocking noises, reducing your car’s power and fuel economy, and potentially cause engine damage.

When the roles are reversed, using higher octane fuel when you usually use regular, the risk isn’t as great. If you use regular gas and switch to premium gas, you won’t notice any extra benefits. So, in my opinion, save your money and fill up with the octane level your vehicle is asking for.
