The BMW i8 was recently named the World Green Car in the World Car Awards, making this the second year in a row that a BMW i model has received this recognition. The award was officially presented to the i8 during the 2015 New York International Auto Show where the model was on display. Last year, the BMW i3 took home the same award and for this year, the i8 was also a finalist for the World Luxury Car award. The World Car international jury selected this model for its combination of sleek design elements, lightweight construction and its plug-in hybrid technology.
“I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of the team in Munich”, says Dr. Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing BMW, speaking at the Award Ceremony in New York. “The BMW i8 represents the future with its unique lightweight construction and unrivalled connectivity. To win this award for the second year in a row shows that our BMW i products are truly leading the world.”
The BMW i8 is the brand’s first-ever plug-in and gets its power from a 1.5L three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The i8 can travel up to 23 miles on just electricity and the combined power offers an acceleration rate of 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds.
