BMW recently celebrated the anniversary of a historic racing victory during this year’s Mille Miglia. This 1,000 + mile four-day race was held this year from May 14-17 in the north Italian city of Brescia. For BMW, however, this year was a historic one for them as it was the 75th anniversary of the 1940 Mille Miglia victory achieved by Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer in the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé.
“While we have realized a number of victories throughout the history of the Mille Miglia, it is our win at the 1940 event that remains as our most enduring and remarkable success,” said Alexander Bilgeri, BMW Group’s Vice President of Corporate Communications of the Americas. “We’re honored to showcase in authentic form the vehicles that have helped BMW achieve incredible success in the world’s most celebrated classic event all those years ago. And we are happy that this year we will bring this amazing event to many via our social channels such as Facebook and our Press Group website.”
Since the brand’s initial win in 1940, a number of more BMW 328 vehicles have driven to victory in the Mille Miglia including the 2004 win of Giuliano Cané and his wife Lucia Galliani. With that win, the BMW 328 officially became the first vehicle to achieve wins in both versions of the Mille Miglia, following the revision of the race in 1977. For the 2015 race, the brand entered a total of six BMW 328 models including the BMW 328 Berlin-Rom Touring Roadster and the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster.
