BMW recently presented the concept of BMW i Home Charging services at the Consumer Electronics Show CES in Las Vegas. Through this system, drivers of BMW i models are offered a new smart charging solution that will better optimize charging costs, saving everyone a significant amount of money overall.
The system works by having the vehicle automatically draw energy when charging from home generated solar power. In situations where the consumer does not have a home solar power system, the vehicle will be charged at the cheapest off-peak rate no matter what time of day you are charging. With this new system, customers can save as much as $800/ year on charging services.
“With Home Charging Services, BMW is the first vehicle manufacturer to offer such a broad-based EV smart charging product,” says BMW Project Manager Julian Lienich. “Our aim is to make mobility as cheap as possible for users and to allow them to maximise their use of green power – but without having to organise everything themselves.”
BMW plans to have this new EV smart charging system available to customers beginning in 2016.
