It may be time for you to renew your driver’s license. Whether it has completely expired or you’re being proactive, this week’s blog will guide you through that renewal process to make your life a little easier. Check it out below and head to the DMV to renew before it may be too late! When to renew: A New Jersey driver’s license is valid for 4 years and can be renewed in person or by mail (when eligible). Requirements for renewal are different based on whether your license was: lost, stolen, damaged, suspended or still valid. You can find more information on the DMV website. In-person renewal: 1 primary document providing your identity (these are a birth certificate, U.S. passport, or current N.J. license.) 1 secondary document providing your identity (these are a military I.D., marriage certificate, college I.D. or transcript.) Your Social Security Number (SSN). Proof of address (these can be a utility bill, issued in the last 90 days, bank statements, issued in the last 60 days or school transcripts, issued in the last 2 years.) A form of payment. By mail renewal: Complete “Skip the Trip” renewal package application. Include a check or money order for the renewal fee. Military driver license renewal: If you or someone you know is currently stationed overseas, you will automatically receive an extension on your N.J. driver’s license renewal if you are an active-duty military member or a N.J. National Guard/ Reserve member. Your N.J. license will not expire until you are discharged. Always carry your extension letter and your active-duty military papers with you when you drive. Have you ever wondered if you were securing your child’s car seat properly? Sure, it is a thought that frequently passes through the minds of thousands of parents. You’re constantly wondering if your child is safe and protected while inside your vehicle and we want to assure you that yes, they are safe inside a BMW. But when it comes to their car seat there are a few tips that can help further the safety of your precious cargo and we’ve dedicated this week’s blog to sharing those tips with you. So, buckle up and follow along with us! Leave your child facing backward until they are at least one years old and weigh 20 pounds. It is preferred that they ride facing backward longer than just a year. Is the car seat snug to the seat? If you jiggle the seat, it should only be able to move about one inch, no more, in any direction. If it can jiggle, tighten the belt around the seat. Be sure that harness straps are tight enough so that slack can’t be pinched between your thumb and forefinger. The harness retainer clip should be at your child’s armpits. Often times, the clip slips and/or moves, be sure that it sits at your child’s armpits each time you buckle them in. Read the manuals, both your vehicle and the car seat manual, to ensure that you are using the car seat properly and you have correctly installed it into your car. Harness straps should always be on your child’s shoulders and should be snug enough that they do not fall off or have the potential to fall off during the car ride. Getting the correct recline angle is crucial for the baby and should be installed at 45 degrees. Your vehicle's manual can help with this further. Use the correct car seat for your child’s age and height. Don’t switch unless your child has outgrown the requirements for the seat. If you’re using a second-hand car seat, look it over and make sure it has not expired, been damaged or is missing any parts. NEVER use a car seat that has been in a collision, even if your child was not present at the time of the collision. The force of impact can weaken the seat. And, there you have it! Usually, stores have corrals for their carts, and it’s just a matter of good citizenship to put your cart into one of them after you’ve finished unloading your purchases into your vehicle. It’s usually not a good time for anyone if you don’t see it in time and hit it - your paint can get scratched, your sidewalls can get dented… not fun. If you spot one in a parking space and you’re not battling for territory with other vehicles, have your copilot get out and move the cart so you can take the spot. That’s two birds with one stone - the spot is yours AND you’ve returned the cart to where it belongs. Use your turn signals. If you’re in a busy lot and see a spot you want, just turn on your signal. It’s easy and lets people know what you’re trying to do. Parking can be confusing - make it easier for your fellow drivers by signaling. Don’t park too close to someone else. Or park too far into a spot. Or across multiple spots. There’s a golden rule of parking - be the driver you want to encounter. Think about how you’d like everyone to park, and then do it. Maybe you’ll start a trend of great parking! You’ll be a national hero! It starts with a single decision to park well. Park far. We’re all trying to get out and get active more and more these days. So maybe instead of duking it out for the closest spot to the entrance, park farther away. One of the most important things to think about when you’re driving is safety - this is something we all know, right? If we don’t, then that’s a whole different problem. Part of that focus on safety is making sure that you have enough fuel in your vehicle to keep it going. There are several negative consequences of driving without enough fuel… and while you may think that we’re being alarmist, well, we’re not. Take a look and see for yourself why you should never let your tank get below 1/4 full. First of all, running on empty (or close to empty) will make your fuel pump burn out and die long before it’s supposed to. Every part in your vehicle has a life expectancy, but you reduce that by driving on empty with your fuel pump. The gas that it pulls through acts as a coolant, and when there’s not enough gas to pump, it starts sucking in air. The air creates heat, which makes the pump burn out. It’s an expensive repair, too, so that’s one word of warning for you. Secondly, your fuel gauge isn’t completely accurate. How accurate can it be without offering you a precise digital readout? And when it’s moving around and expanding with heat? Don’t trust the “E” if only for the fact that you could have 50 or 0.5 miles left in your tank, and there’s only one way to find out which it is. Never let your tank get below a quarter full, especially in the winter. The last thing is just as important as the former two. Sediment collects at the bottom of every single gas tank, and when you’re low on gas, the only fuel your engine has to use is the stuff with all the gunk in it. That gunk gets stirred up and sent through your fuel lines and fuel injectors and clogs up the works very effectively. So, if you make a habit of driving on empty, then you’re not cleaning out your gas tank (I am the kind of person who would try to sugarcoat it that way), you’re necessitating a full engine flush way sooner than you’d normally need to get one… which is generally never. Fill up your tank when you’re down to a quarter tank of fuel left. You’ll thank me when your vehicle purrs like a kitten for the rest of its life. Service Costs Less With Us!
