5 Things to Look for in a Test Drive

The time has come to find a new car and the search you have gone on has paid off at last. You have found a vehicle that might be “the one” so you decide to take it for a test drive. When test driving a car, you will likely already know at least the basics such as its miles per gallon, engine type, whether it is two or four wheel drive and other things of that nature that were important in your initial search. Now it is time to get down to the nitty gritty and see if this is going to be your next car. Here are a few things to keep in mind during your test drive before purchasing a new vehicle. 5) Comfort When you sit down in the car are the seats comfortable? It can provide a vital first impression when getting into a car. Another thought has to be about the car’s leg room. Do you have enough and how easy it is to adjust the seats so you have enough room? Are the seats in the back adjustable as well? Everyone in the car needs to feel comfortable or why bother buying it? Despite the fact that the salesman will be constantly talking up the car, keep an eye on how comfortable the car is during your test drive. When you are driving the car or sitting in the back seat make sure you are comfortable throughout the ride. 4) Storage Does the car have enough seats for everyone in your family? Is there enough trunk space? These are also very important questions to ask yourself while test driving any car. If you decide to bring a family member along with you, have them keep an eye on it while they are in the back. As far as vans and SUVs are concerned, do some of the seats in the car collapse so that you can bring enough gear to a particular event or activity? Does the car have a compartment in the back that leads directly to the trunk without opening it so you can store longer objects or put something in the back during a drive? If you were told that a car has a feature that you need, make sure they have it and that you approve of the way it operates. 3) Features and extras Cars these days have so many cool features like satellite radio, sunroofs and other great amenities. Does your car have the ones that you are looking for? As far as safety features go, do you have roadside assistance if you get into an accident? Does the car have a camera in the back to help you see what is behind you when you are backing out? Is the car equipped with collision warning, lane watch and automatic brakes that will stop the car if it thinks that you might hit something? These are all important extras and features that you might want to have in a car- so see if they work during the test drive. 2) Power How quickly does the car go from 0 to 60 miles per hour? Can it pass other cars on the highway without any trouble? How quickly can you stop your car when you are driving on the highway? Focusing on the car’s road performance is obviously the point of the test drive so make sure it passes your test. Cars can go faster now without putting as much power on the pedals so get a feel for how fast you can go and what it takes to slow down your car. 1) Handling This is very important when test driving a vehicle. How smooth does the car make turns? Does it corner well? That means you need to find out how much it takes for the wheels of the car to turn as you turn the steering wheel. Do you need to turn the wheel a lot to make a wide turn or do you only need to move the wheel a little bit? Efficiency can be important to a driver and differs depending on your preferences. During the test drive, it is important to get a grasp of all these things when it comes to handling. A test drive can sell you on a car or make you realize it is not the one- so make sure to keep track of these factors. Most importantly, make sure that you like the car and it suits your needs. If so, it may be the car for you. Contact Flemington BMW today to schedule a test drive in one of our incredible vehicles.

7 Essentials to Pack for a Road Trip in Your BMW

Road trip! Many of us have been on a road trip where you just pack up the car and go. If you have not yet, it is an experience worth doing at least once in your life. With the warmer months and spring break coming up for some schools, a road trip might be worth embarking on. The destination is selected, and then it comes time to pack the car. BMWs are great cars for road trips because of the storage and comfort that are provided for all passengers. Obviously, many things need to be packed in your BMW for a road trip and the people who travel with you will determine what comes with you. For example, if the kids are coming, you will need more room than if it is just you and your significant other. Here are eight items you must have to make this road trip fun and unforgettable. 7) Water It does not matter where you are going or how you are getting there, water is essential in everyday life. Don’t waste time stopping for more beverages. Instead, have your car fully stocked with some water bottles so that everyone stays hydrated and you save valuable time on the road. 6) Pillows and Blankets This is optional, but if you are not going to stay in a hotel in order to save money or just want to take nap while you are not driving then pillows and blankets are a good idea to bring on a trip. The blankets can keep you warm while the pillows are giving your head some much-needed support for the snooze you are bound to take. It is also probably a good idea to keep them away from the driver, especially if they have been at the wheel for a while. Let them pull over and switch to the passenger seat before getting some much needed sleep. 5) Games or Books (For Passengers) Drivers this is not for you so keep your hands at ten and two for this one. By the way, if a driver is reading this right now while they are at the wheel we do appreciate the interest, but please save the remainder of the article for a rest stop or bathroom break please- for the sake of everyone involved! Anyway, a road trip can and will get boring at times so bringing your favorite book or game will help to pass the time in addition to making it more enjoyable. 4) Common Sense (Especially for Drivers) If you have driven for a long time and are tired, take a break so someone else who is fresh can take the wheel. Do not be a hero- just take a nap. When you wake up then it will be your time to shine once again. Driving can take a lot out of you so do not think you can drive for some crazy amount of time like 24 hours straight without stopping, because it is not worth it. Step on the brakes and then take a break. 3) Your Singing Voices Singing is a great way to lift the spirits of everyone in the car on a road trip. If a great song comes on the radio and it is your jam- just belt it out. Some people might be uncomfortable singing, but if you get bored it can really help to pass the time, and it is fun too. Do not be afraid to take those golden pipes of yours for a spin. 2) An Awesome Playlist Singing is not for everyone, but listening to music is something we all do so get ahead of the game and put together a great playlist before the trip. Have everyone who is going put in some song or album requests to you like a DJ on the radio. The entire car will be rocking down the highway as you blast some of the classics and all of your favorite tunes. You may even time it to make sure you have enough songs for entire trip so if you lose the signal of your favorite radio station, your favorite songs will still be with you. 1) A positive attitude “Are we there yet?” “How much longer?” “Leave me alone.” Alright, alright, enough! We have all said those phrases at one point or another, but staying calm and having a positive attitude is important on a long trip. You will be with the same people for a long stretch of time that will include moments of joy, happiness and some frustration. But you are strong and can get through it. “We will get there soon.” “Be patient.” “Let’s pull over so we can get out and stretch a little bit.” Road trips can be really fun so go into it with positive thoughts, those other seven essentials, and you will be just fine. You might even enjoy the ride. If you need a vehicle to get you through all of life’s road trips, then contact Flemington BMW today.

The Innovation of BMW

For the past century, BMW has been an iconic symbol of precision and fine craftsmanship in the luxury automotive industry. And when your brand is consistently setting the standard for excellence, resting on yesterday’s laurels is never an option. At BMW, innovation is more than just a fashionable buzzword that’s casually tossed around for effect. It’s a core principle fueling the company’s unrelenting pursuit of technological advancements that excite, inspire and provide for a more enjoyable overall driving experience. Being at the forefront of automotive technology means matching cutting edge modernizations with the tastes and needs of today’s discerning consumers. And no one has its finger on the pulse of the world’s savviest drivers more than BMW. Functionality In today’s fast-paced, on-the-go world, consumers are unwilling to part with their connectivity. And BMW is committed to meeting the challenges of an evolving generation of drivers. BMW is leading from the front of the pack in all things high-tech, including hi-res, 3D navigational systems, intelligent parking assistance and even a hotspot for passengers to surf the Internet on the device of their choice. Moreover, BMW Gesture Control means that the vehicle’s technology can be controlled with simple and safe hand gestures that prevent drivers from diverting their eyes from the road. With BMW ConnectedDrive, getting behind the wheel no longer leads to separation anxiety from state-of-the-art conveniences. Safety At BMW, engineering the highest possible safety for drivers and passengers is a passion. BMW cars and trucks are designed to not only withstand impact, but prevent it as well. Light years beyond the days of restraints and airbags, BMW houses high IQ technology within a bodyshell that provides a panoramic cocoon of protection. For instance, Dynamic Traction Control affords greater stability in wet and slippery conditions. Lane Departure Warning employs embedded cameras to notify drivers when they’re changing lanes without signaling to fellow motorists. And since sensors can instantaneously recognize an accident, airbags deploy in a brainy fashion that reduces injuries, particularly to the head. Efficiency Yes, it’s entirely possible to enjoy a thrilling road experience even as you’re conserving fuel and limiting harm to the environment. With BMW EfficientDynamics, low emissions and consumption equals high confidence in vehicle performance and economy. The combination of aerodynamics, lightweight design and overall engine efficiency leads to a reduction in the need for C02-producing sources of energy. Or no need at all. BMW eDrive is the company’s concept submission into the electric market, powered exclusively by a clean electric motor and a lithium-ion battery that can be charged by a traditional household socket. Ergonomics BMW engineers are passionate about not only the efficiency of the vehicle, but also the individual at the controls of it. Ergonomics is the scientific study of humans as they perform various tasks. As it pertains to driving, BMW is constantly searching for improvements in the efficiencies of getting from here to there. The voice control system, as an example, negates the need to fumble around with devices or the dashboard to place a call, change a radio station or activate temperature control. The launch button for the system is embedded on a multifunctional, ergonomically integrated steering wheel that literally puts an array of controls at the motorist’s fingertips. Performance BMW offers engine options for every taste and every need, each manufactured to the highest possible standard of excellence. Whether drivers are seeking muscular power, fuel economy or some combination of the two, BMW has them covered with its TwinPower Turbo technology. The company’s four-cylinder models provide unexpected thrust, particularly considering how economically it consumes fuel. However, at eight cylinders, BMW supplies unparalleled get-off along with a stunningly smooth ride. And for those with an eye toward unsurpassed MPGs, BMW’s diesel engines transform chemical energy into usable energy with a level of uncommon efficiency that positively impacts the consumer’s wallet. Autonomy If you like BMW’s innovations today, your jaw will be hitting the ground tomorrow. When it comes to vehicle technology, there is no finish line at BMW. Not far off on the horizon will be driverless cars and trucks that deliver the equivalent of a chauffeured experience. BMW Active Assist is the segment of the company’s evolutionary pursuits that covers partially and fully automated driving. Using strategically placed laser scanners, radar and cameras, the Active Assist initiative aims to maximize motorist independence, safety and peace of mind. There’s reading about the freshest technologies in today’s BMW vehicles, and then there’s experiencing them firsthand. Test drive one of BMW’s trailblazing models of cars and trucks today to become immersed in the future of the automotive industry.

Diesel Engines: Fact vs. Fiction

Diesel engines are grossly misunderstood, like Ozzy Osbourne’s lyrics or the proper way to knot a bow tie. And as such, they’ve long fielded a bad, often inaccurate, rap as a power source for passenger vehicles. The very mention of a diesel engine typically conjures up an image of a heavy-duty pickup truck or farm equipment; former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal wasn’t known as “The Diesel” for his grace and agility. But the modern diesel engine has little in common with its older siblings, so the time has arrived to dispel nagging myths, set the record straight and cast aside all preconceptions. Fiction: Hybrids boast unsurpassed fuel economy Fact: Sure, hybrid vehicles operate efficiently. But diesel engines deliver equal or improved fuel economy, while easily outdistancing traditional gas engines by as much as 20-30% for similar models. Diesel fuel is extremely energy dense, rooted in a highly efficient process that wastes substantially less power and puts savings at the pump in consumers’ wallets. Plus, actual MPGs frequently exceed sticker figures that have been calculated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Fiction: Diesel engines are unfriendly to the environment Fact: In the past, true. But that was long before the advent of clean diesel technologies, such as those found in BMW’s impeccable line of vehicles. Diesel engines have attacked old stereotypes with a two-pronged approach. First, the engine has evolved by light years to include emissions-zapping properties that slash pollution levels. Additionally, today’s diesel fuel contains 97% less harmful sulfur than in the past, making it both greener and distinctly less impactful on the environment and individual health. Fiction: Improved efficiency comes at the expense of power Fact: Diesel engines are bona fide dual-threats, packing quickness and agility with unfettered muscle. They generate an ample supply of low-end torque, a measure of force or rotational power inside the engine. To the layman, more torque equals greater acceleration and the strength to steadily remain at top speed, even when hauling cargo. Torque is actually a better measurement of performance than horsepower, and today’s diesel engines are loaded with it. Fiction: Diesel fuel is inaccessible Fact: No, you won’t need a Sherpa or to update your GPS app to locate the nearest diesel pump. The number of gas stations offering diesel is steadily rising, a trend that’s expected to continue in the coming years. There are more than 90,000 pumps across the nation, so there’s bound to be one in your local neighborhood. And if you must drive a little further to fuel up, you can rest a little easier knowing that you’re getting better mileage than your fellow road warriors. Fiction: Diesel engines struggle to turn over in cold weather Fact: Again, a stigma from the past that has since been addressed with new advancements in technology. The drawback to diesel fuel is that it tends to become somewhat gelatinous at lower temperatures, which is less than ideal for cranking up an engine. However, this issue has been adequately tackled with cutting edge, high-pressure fuel injectors that improve viscosity and fuel disbursement at startup. Fiction: Diesel engines create noise pollution Fact: Okay, so diesels were once the garage bands of the road, creating loud bursts and recurrent knocking from a process known as ‘hard combustion’. But these days, they run every bit as quiet and unassuming as engines operating with gasoline. Automotive engineering has helped to markedly dial down the engine’s clatter, with help from modern fuel injection techniques and noise and vibration-muffling technologies. Fiction: Diesel engines have a short shelf life Fact: On the contrary, diesel engines are now hailed for their longevity and durability, which saves money and protects a vehicle’s trade-in and resale value in the long term. Diesels are manufactured for the long haul, with the sturdy components to withstand the demands of higher compression and resist traditional wear and tear. Moreover, thicker diesel fuel doubles as a lubricant, constantly protecting the moving parts inside the engine. Fiction: Owning and maintaining a diesel engine can be costly Fact: Since diesel engines are so well-made, repairs are far less common. In fact, there’ve been recorded cases of diesels registering more than 900,000 miles on the original engine, an astounding testament to precision and craftsmanship. Now, these workhorses do require regular maintenance, such as oil and filter changes. However, since diesels are not made with spark plugs or distributors, costly tune-ups are rendered unnecessary. Looking to improve your gas mileage, without sacrificing an ounce of speed, power or luxury?
