Flemington BMW’s Vehicle Fluid Guide: Oil What it does: cools your engine, lubricates moving parts, keeps moving parts clean What to do: change it regularly (dealer recommendation) and check it monthly Coolant What it does: regulates your vehicle’s temperature. Where to find it: in a reservoir near the radiator. What to do: if the level is low (level is indicated on the reservoir) take the vehicle to the shop to get coolant topped up. Power Steering Fluid What it does: helps you steer the vehicle Where to find it: a reservoir at the base of the windshield. What to do: same as above, if the level is low take your vehicle to the shop to get the fluid topped up. Brake Fluid What it does: helps braking mechanisms work properly What to do: if the level is chronically low, your brakes could be wearing out. Windshield Washer Fluid What it does: helps clean windshields of dust, debris, bug guts, etc. What to do: if you run out, get more at your local gas station and just refill the clearly labeled tank.

Let me set the scene, you’re out on the open road, windows down, music up and all of a sudden your vehicle starts making a weird noise and your vehicle starts to slow down. You pull over to the side of the road, smoke is pouring out of your engine and you’re not sure what’s happening. Or maybe you blew out a tire. Either way, this is not how you wanted to be spending your summer road trip and now you’re regretting not stopping in to see us to service your BMW before you left for your trip. No worries though because luckily, you haven’t left yet and there’s still time to service your ride! In fact, this week we have a few summer car care tips to help get you through the summer and ensure that you steer clear of any breakdowns! Make sure your battery is prepared for high temps Many people think battery issues only happen in the winter time but that’s not true. In fact, extreme temperatures have an impact on your battery, no matter if it is the heat or the cold. Heat and vibration are your battery’s worst enemy which will lead to an internal breakdown and eventual failure. So, make sure your battery is securely fastened in your vehicle, properly cleaned, and charged ready to go. Keep your tires properly inflated Your tires should always be filled to proper PSI levels, but driving on under-inflated tires can cause tires to overheat and eventually blowout which is extremely dangerous to yourself, your passengers, and other drivers. Make a note to check your tire’s PSI at least once a month (even the spare) and be sure to do so when they are cold for the best, most accurate reading. Keep your engine cool An overheated engine is very common in the hot, summer heat. But if you keep your coolant at the proper levels and periodically flush out your engine, chances of your engine overheating are slim! If you choose to top off your coolant yourself, be sure to let your vehicle cool down and NEVER open your radiator cap when the engine is hot! Inspect what’s under the hood Often times, we forget about all the components that are working hard under the hood to help get us to where we want to be during the summer months! Well, we’re here to remind you to give them a look over. Check on your engine’s hoses, drive belts, and anything susceptible to heat-related deterioration. These things can lead to a breakdown which is what we’re trying to avoid. So, spend a few minutes when your vehicle is cool & make sure there are no cracks, soft spots or any other signs of poor condition!

Changing your vehicle's oil is an important part of regular maintenance that keeps your engine running smoothly. If you're new to car maintenance, changing your oil may seem daunting, but it's a simple process that anyone can do. So, here's a beginner's guide to changing your vehicle's oil: Flemington BMW’s Guide To Changing Your Oil: Gather the necessary materials: You'll need oil, an oil filter, a drain pan, a wrench, a funnel, and a rag. Locate the oil filter and drain plug: The oil filter and drain plug are usually located under the engine, but the exact location may vary depending on your vehicle. Consult your owner's manual for specific instructions. Drain the oil: Place the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the plug with a wrench. Allow the oil to drain into the pan. Replace the oil filter: Use the wrench to remove the old oil filter and replace it with a new one. Add new oil: Using a funnel, pour the new oil into the engine. Check the dipstick to ensure you have added enough oil. Clean up: Wipe up any spills with a rag and dispose of the used oil and filter at a recycling center. Congratulations, you've successfully changed your vehicle's oil! Remember to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or as recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer.

Windshield wipers are often an underrated and forgotten piece of equipment that is a necessity for your everyday drive! That’s why you need to make sure that your wipers are in good shape by checking them out at least once a month. Do you know the warning signs that indicate your wipers are on their way out? Do you know what the factors are that go into your wipers’ lifespans? When you’re checking out your wiper blades, look for these things: Broken frame: detachment of frame arms at joints or connection points. Metal Corrosion: especially at joints and claws. Visible cracks, tears, and missing pieces in the rubber squeegee’s edge. Flex rubber squeegee back and forth to see if it is still flexible. Aged squeegees will have difficulty conforming to the shape of your windshield and create streaks. Check squeegee wiping edge for rounded edges which can prevent the wiper blade from making strong contact with the windshield and reduces wipe quality. Tug to ensure the wiper blade has been securely installed on the wiper arm. Check that squeegee is secure in the wiper frame. Your wipers can break down due to several factors that are kind of unavoidable if you use your car at all (and some, even if you don’t use your car): Sun: Ultraviolet light and ozone deterioration Oil: Car waxes and exhaust hold rubber-deteriorating oil Airborne debris: Sand, mud and dust carried in the wind Moisture: Acid rain and salt water (in moist air both near the shore and inland)

These fluctuations can really affect your tires PSI and cause detrimental driving conditions! So, below we’ve compiled information on why keeping your tire at its proper PSI is so important! Why Your Tire’s PSI Is So Important: Proper PSI will help optimize performance and your vehicle's fuel efficiency. This is especially useful if you tend to run your A/C or heat for long periods of time and increasing gas prices). Avoid sidewall flexing and tire squirm when properly inflated. Avoid potential dangers like collisions, blowouts, heat build-up, and potential rolling hazards. Correct PSI improves durability and performance designed to match the specific needs of your vehicle. PSI stabilizes the tire’s structure, blends responsiveness, traction, and handling. Extreme temperatures and driving conditions will affect your tire’s PSI. Underinflated tires can wear prematurely due to being soft and unable to maintain their proper shape. Overinflated tires can wear unevenly due to being rigid and hard. It can also lead to a tire blowout. If your vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time, chances are the PSI is incorrect and you will need to fill up the tires. Vehicles that sit without being used have a tendency to have under-inflated tires. Your tires will last longer and the tread won’t wear out as easily if your tires are always properly inflated to the correct PSI.
